Unlocking the World of Mathematics: A Journey of Discovery at Nyahera Girls' Math Camp

Amidst the vibrant landscapes of Oyugis - Homa Bay County, Kenya, along the Kisumu Kisii highway lies a place where the beauty of mathematics blossomed in all its glory. The recent math camp at Eng. Peter Owidi School - Nyahera Girls’ was nothing short of a mathematical marvel. Bringing together 121 students from 7 schools, this unique opportunity served as a gateway to the enchanting world of numbers, equations, and mathematical wonders. In the heart of this camp, a message echoed loud and clear: "The 21st Century is the Mathematicians' Playground." -- a realization of Al Thaler’s prediction cited by National Academy of Sciences (2013).

The purpose of this three-day maths camp was clear: to ignite a passion for mathematics in the hearts of young girls. It aimed to turn these young minds into math game ambassadors, learning through play, problem-solving, and exploration. The camp introduced them to various resources, the magic of storytelling, gamification, and the art of puzzling through school mathematics. It was not just about equations but also about nurturing leadership, community outreach, and inspiring careers in mathematics-related fields. The ultimate mission was to encourage students to initiate extracurricular math clubs, fostering an enduring interest in the joys of math. These students are now the agents of change, challenging the notion that "math is boring, hard, and only for a select few." They've shown that math can be not just fun but also accessible to everyone. Into diverse themes – it encompassed mathematical thinking, data science, games and puzzles, modeling, physical activities, and mentorship, underscoring that the 21st century is, indeed, the Mathematicians Playground.

Feleria shared her reflections, stating, "It was a chance to connect with all of them on a personal level and share my own journey with math... the experience has left me with a renewed commitment to creating an environment where math is not just learned but enjoyed."

This remarkable journey would not have been possible without the dedication of several key figures. Dr. Mary Ochieng, the Director of Research and Graduate Training at Strathmore Institute of Mathematical Sciences (SIMS), played a pivotal role. SIMS collaboratively with African Maths Initiative (AMI) and supported by funding from the International Science Programme (ISP) were instrumental in making this math camp a reality. The African Maths Initiative, represented by Samuel Okoth, Owen Mulinya Kizito, Lucian Talu Mayabi, Michael Okoth Chariga, and Feleria Adinda, played instrumental roles. The community's support was undeniable, with Mr. Omer from St. Mary’s Nyamogo Girls School and the host school principal through Mr. Ebby Odago of Nyahera Girls contributing to the camp's planning and execution. Strathmore University alumni, including John Robert Ouko, Purity, Marian, and Stella, both in person and virtually, added depth to the mentorship sessions.

Michael recognized the challenge students face, stating, "At first, it seemed like the students were expecting the camp to be very serious, but after the first session, their attitude changed."

The students embarked on a journey that blended mathematical exploration with sheer joy. From the playful learning of "Game 21" to solving the intricate "Handshake Problem," the camp delved into various facets of math. "Counting Squares" revealed the enchanting characteristics of squares, while "Reframing" uncovered surprising connections among mathematical problems. The world of data science was explored through "Data Cleaning," and modeling concepts were introduced through "Epidemic Modeling" and the "Vaccination Game." Puzzles adorned classroom walls for the "Daily Puzzles" session, and "Quick Math" challenged participants daily. Physical activities added a dynamic twist to the learning experience.

Owen's perspective shed light on the transformative power of playful learning, emphasizing, "The math camp showed a different perspective on students' expectations, presenting a warm, engaging learning environment."

This grand adventure commenced on October 24th, with preparations at Nyahera Girls School. The camp unfurled from October 25th to October 27th, extending from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, making it a holistic experience. But this camp was not just a three-day event; it marked the commencement of a journey. The roadmap ahead includes follow-up sessions at schools, nurturing the students' newly formed math clubs and the promise of future gatherings with even more students.

Samuel, who had a unique role in designing activities, felt that the camp left the students with high hopes of positively utilizing their upcoming holiday. He added, "Opportunity is like luck; it provides you with a chance to succeed. The key lies in how you seize and make the most of that opportunity.' This message deeply connected with the students and established a positive atmosphere for the camp."

The girls' journals hold their personal reflections on challenges and lessons learned. These journals encapsulate the spirit of the camp and the transformative journey these students embarked upon.

The recent math camp at Nyahera Girls' was not just a mathematical event; it was a celebration of the human spirit's boundless potential. With the right guidance, an encouraging environment, and a touch of creativity, these students have become torchbearers for mathematics, lighting up the path for many more to follow.
