Launching Uganda's First Official International Day of Mathematics
Embracing the Beauty of Math
March 14th, a date once marked solely by the birthday of the Nobel Prize-winning theoretical physicist Albert Einstein amongst other unpopular events, now bears a new significance on the global calendar - it’s the International Day of Mathematics (IDM). Declared by UNESCO in 2017, this day celebrates the language of the universe and its profound impact on our lives. This year, the IDM made its grand entrance into Uganda, and the festivities lasted from March 8th to the 16th.
For years, the Association of Women Mathematicians Uganda (AWoM) has been championing mathematics education in the country. But despite their efforts, the IDM had never been officially launched in Uganda. That all changed in 2024.
The journey to the launch began with a series of activities across the southern and western parts of the country, engaging students and the public in the wonders of mathematics. From captivating workshops to thought-provoking conferences, the stage was set for the grand unveiling.

On March 14, 2024, history was made at Makerere University Central Teaching Facility 2, where the IDM was officially launched in Uganda. The event was graced by esteemed guests, including Assistant Secretary-General of UNESCO, Dr. Dominic Mundrugo, who delivered an inspiring speech that resonated with all present.

But the celebrations didn’t stop there. The enthusiasm spilled over to Freedom Square, where a RUN4MATH marathon took place under the theme: Playing with Math. Over 1,500 scholars, representing a diverse array of schools, participated in this exhilarating event which culminated on Saturday March 16th with the 7th RUN4MATH Marathon. It was a testament to the universal appeal of mathematics marked by different presentations and activities from different schools.

Throughout the festivities, one theme remained constant: The Role of Gender in Mathematics Education. AWoM seized the opportunity to address this crucial issue, engaging students in discussions about gender perceptions and their impact on mathematical performance. From individual beliefs to societal norms, every aspect was explored, highlighting the need for inclusivity in STEM education.
Boys and girls alike embraced the message, demonstrating that mathematics knows no gender boundaries. With each activity, the barriers to mathematical success were dismantled, paving the way for a more equitable future.
But the journey doesn’t end here. AWoM has ambitious plans for the future, including the much-anticipated Maths Camp in August. With updated materials and newfound momentum, they are poised to make an even greater impact in the years to come.
As we reflect on this momentous occasion, one thing is clear: the beauty of mathematics knows no bounds. It transcends borders, defies stereotypes, and empowers us to unlock the mysteries of the universe. And in Uganda, thanks to the tireless efforts of AWoM, its light shines brighter than ever before.
