From Student to Educator: A Journey of Love for Mathematics and STEM
Samuel Okoth's Path to Becoming a Mathematics Educator
For what feels like ages, I've been itching to share the incredible tale of my journey to becoming a math and science educator. From my earliest days in primary school, I had the privilege of being guided by the most amazing teachers and mentors who not only opened my eyes to the wonders of Mathematics but also nurtured a deep love for the subject, leading me to my ultimate dream of becoming a math teacher.
One of the greatest blessings in my academic journey was having Mr. Edward Odula Muok as my primary school math teacher. This master of math had a magical way of making the subject come alive for each and every student. His weekly open-ended tests were a true testament to his genius – they weren't just about getting the right answer, but rather about understanding the problem, thinking critically, and devising a plan to find the solution. It was like embarking on a thrilling adventure every Friday morning, facing 25 unique questions that challenged our minds in the most exhilarating way possible. Our school soared to new heights in mathematics, sweeping the top spot in cluster exams and even national examinations each year. I'm convinced Mr. Odula's teaching was pure magic – no wonder he's happily retired now, basking in the glory of the impact he's made on countless young minds.

Moving on to secondary school, I had the privilege of encountering another set of extraordinary educators – Mr. Victor Ochieng and Mr. Okongo Philip. Mr. Victor, our math guru, was the champion of individual learning goals. He understood that each student had unique strengths and learning styles, and he encouraged us to embrace our strengths and think critically like never before. With 4 a.m. tests to assess our progress, he empowered us to explore Mathematics through our own understanding, using our "third eye" – that's right, critical thinking! I must say, I feel incredibly blessed to have been taught by these legendary educators, and I know their current students are forever inspired by their brilliance.

Having been taught by both Mr. Okong'o and Mr. Victor, the latter being a former student of the former, I consider myself incredibly blessed.
As I delved deeper into my teaching career, I had the honor of interacting with countless other educators, both as a mentor and a mentee. My mentors, Emily Flemming and Zach Mbasu, opened my eyes to the power of continuous learning and the endless possibilities it brings. As I once wrote in my first blog, "As a teacher, one of the greatest challenges is how to plan and cater for the individual learning needs of all students, at the same time, in the same classroom. This is possible through management of many students, use of technology and embracing change. Otherwise, what makes math? Isn't it a formalism of common sense?" Indeed, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, and there's no room for ugly mathematics!

Now, fast forward to this summer, where I'm embarking on an exciting mission to organize a math camp at my alma mater, Nyarongi Community. The goal? To spread the love, joy, and beauty of math and inspire a new generation of math champions and ambassadors. Having engaged with students across Africa both physically and virtually, I've identified the needs and gaps in my community, and I'm determined to make a difference. The community may lack resources like a library, innovation center, or STEM hub, but that's not stopping us. With the support of volunteers from around the world, we're gearing up for a math camp that will leave a lasting impact on these bright young minds.
