Personal Experience as a Facilitator in the Creative Coding with Scratch Workshop

Facilitating the "Creative Coding with Scratch" workshop at the Nyanza Initiative for Girls Education and
Empowerment (NIGEE) in Kisumu was one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional
journey. The workshop, organized by a dynamic team of facilitators from various STEM organizations,
aimed to introduce educators to Scratch programming while equipping them with creative coding
techniques to make learning more engaging for their students. My role was not only to guide the
participants through the learning process but also to ensure they felt empowered to implement these
new skills in their classrooms.

Workshop Preparations and Planning

The month leading up to the workshop was a crucial phase of intense preparation and collaboration. As
facilitators, we conducted baseline surveys to assess participants' familiarity with coding and their
access to technology. The results revealed a significant gap—most educators had limited experience
with Scratch and faced challenges like unreliable internet connectivity and a lack of personal laptops.
These findings shaped our approach, driving us to focus on offline Scratch use and securing resources,
such as laptops from Fablab Kisumu, to bridge technological gaps.

Interactive Workshop Sessions

The workshop itself was a lively and interactive experience. One of the most memorable activities was
the "Human Robot Game" where participants acted as robots and programmers to understand coding
logic. The laughter and teamwork during this session set the tone for the workshop, breaking the ice and
making coding concepts approachable. Many participants shared that this activity helped them see
coding as less intimidating and more fun—a mindset they could pass on to their students.
Another highlight was the guided exploration of Scratch’s interface. For many participants, this was their
first exposure to coding, and their initial hesitancy quickly turned into excitement as they discovered
how to use Scratch blocks, sprites, and backdrops. It was inspiring to watch as educators, some of whom
had never used a computer for creative purposes, began creating simple animations and interactive
projects.
The collaborative team projects further showcased the participants’ growth. Teachers from diverse
backgrounds worked together to create Scratch projects tied to their curriculum. One group designed an
animation to teach geometric shapes, while another created an interactive quiz on environmental
conservation. Seeing their ideas come to life reinforced the power of collaboration and creativity in
problem-solving.

Overcoming Challenges

Like any learning experience, the workshop was not without its challenges. One of the main hurdles was
the participants’ varying levels of familiarity with technology. While some teachers quickly adapted to
Scratch, others struggled with the basics. To address this, we implemented peer mentoring, pairing
participants with more tech-savvy colleagues. This approach not only improved learning outcomes but
also fostered a supportive environment.
Another challenge was the limited time for project development. With so much to cover in a short
period, participants often felt rushed. To mitigate this, we introduced self-paced learning resources and
encouraged participants to continue exploring Scratch after the workshop. We also emphasized that
their initial projects were just the beginning of a longer journey in creative coding.
The issue of unreliable internet connectivity was particularly significant, as it hindered access to online
resources. However, by emphasizing Scratch's offline capabilities and providing downloadable materials,
we ensured that participants could continue learning and teaching coding regardless of their internet
access.

Impact and Reflection

The impact of the workshop was evident during the final session, where participants presented their
Scratch projects. The pride and excitement in their voices as they explained how they would integrate
these projects into their lessons were palpable. One teacher shared that she planned to use Scratch to
create interactive storytelling activities for her students, while another expressed enthusiasm about
starting a student coding club.
Feedback from participants underscored the success of the workshop. Over 90% reported increased
confidence in using Scratch, and many requested advanced training to deepen their skills. For me, this
was a clear indication that the workshop had not only met its objectives but also inspired educators to
continue exploring creative coding.

Personal Takeaways

As a facilitator, this experience deepened my understanding of the challenges and opportunities in
integrating technology into education. It reaffirmed the importance of designing training programs that
are inclusive and adaptable to diverse needs. The collaborative spirit of the workshop—among
facilitators, participants, and supporting organizations—highlighted the power of community in driving
educational innovation.
Most importantly, this workshop reinforced my belief in the transformative potential of creative coding.
Watching educators who were initially hesitant about technology grow confident and excited about
using Scratch in their classrooms was incredibly rewarding. It reminded me why I am passionate about
STEM education: it empowers both teachers and students to think creatively, solve problems, and
imagine new possibilities.

In conclusion, the Creative Coding with Scratch workshop was not just a professional milestone but
also a personal one. It provided me with valuable insights into the needs of educators and the impact of
creative coding in the classroom. As I reflect on this experience, I am motivated to continue supporting
educators in their journey toward innovative and engaging teaching.
